Messages Messed Up

I tried to delete all my text messages by going to manage applications, force stop on it and clear data. It didn't delete my messages but now the options to set a specific notification sound for text messages is greyed out.

1. How do I delete ALL text messages from ALL contacts?
2. How do I un-grey the notification sound options?

Here's how I did it:

Go into Messages
Press Menu
Choose Delete
Press Menu again when the new screen comes up
Choose Delete All Threads

No idea about the second thing.
