I have the latest update of Messenger awaiting installation on my Android device, but it is named as Work Chat. I am suspicious that it is a fake app and so haven't yet installed it.

I noticed someone else had the same thing occur, but for some reason removed their enquiry from Reddit.

Can anybody shed light upon this?

    Thanks.

  2. Mmm. Haven't noticed this one. I'll have a look. When I saw your post, thought it was just an update calling it work chat, thought I wouldn't be surprised.

    Messenger is messenger, period.
    Anything else is adware.
Work chat? What if you aren't working?
What type of notification are you getting?

I update all apps using the Aptoide platform (I distrust ggl). Aptoide automatically notifies me when an app has an updated version available. Then I update manually. When I have downloaded an update, I am prompted, on the screen of my phone, to install the app; the app name appearing at the top of the screen. I always check to make sure the app name is what it ought to be. The latest version 316.0.0.0.10, of Messenger is named as Work Chat. The version of Messenger I currently have installed is 315.0.0.1.119. The current version on ggl play is stated to be 313.0.0.15.119! I could have a fake version installed.

I have just uninstalled the version of 'Messenger' I have, using Revo, and installed the current Aptoide trusted version, 316.0.0.0.57, which was named Messenger when I installed. All now seems okay.

It is possible I recently overlooked a fake installation when I last updated, but if this was the case, then Aptoide would have been deceived into recognising it as the legitimate app update from their trusted source.

Anyway, now I seem to have the legitimate version installed. Ggl play however, seems to have a very old version as its latest update.

Hopefully none of your messages were compromised by the fake app

Which "Messenger" app in particular are you referring to?
I've never heard of this "Work Chat".
There's many apps called "Messenger" on Aptoide. And the forum you posted in, is for this in the Play Store.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=messanger.messenger.messenger
But the dev's website for this "Messenger" app shows a "Too many redirects" error. Of course I'm NOT going to try it.

Maybe a beta version, like a work-in-progress sort of thing.

That would explain (A) the word 'work' in the title, and (B) the higher version number.

I too distrust Screwgle and so use alternative appstores, one of which is UpToDown.
When Android System Webview gets updated, UpToDown usually gets a beta version before the release of the standard app.

This has caused me aggrevation in the past, as sometimes there are bugs and the app is usually larger as well.

Unfortunately, the Android System Webview Beta will seamlessly update the standard app, but not visa-versa (probably due to the higher version number of the beta version), so then I must uninstall all updates to go back to the original.

This is one reason I also use ApkPure as another appstore, so that I can discern if apps actually have been updated or if it is just another beta release.

Perhaps turning off update notifications would be beneficial for you, as it was for me.

Check for updates once a week or so.

I totally missed the big problems Google had with apps crashing due to a crummy Android System Webview update a few months ago, simply because I resisted my OCD and did not update any apps for a month or two.

I run multiple devices, so updating becomes a real chore and a PITA.

"If it's not broke, don't fix it."
said someone a long time ago.

A more recent translation could be
"If your software works and you like it, don't update it."

    Sure, some updates are necessary-
but in the end, all apps will be updated to the point that you no longer like them or they won't work on your device.

Update what really needs it, and relax for the rest.

Facebook Messenger is the app I'm referring too. When I posted this I didn't realise that the icon you refer to was for a different app.

I used ApkPure for years, but about 3 months ago I installed an update from them fro their own app which had a virus. Suddenly my mobile browsers were being opened at random ad pages. I don't use protection on any of my devices, but on these rare occasions I needed to. Out of several anti-virus/malware apps I tried, only Kaspersky was able to isolate where the problem was, and as soon as I unistalled ApkPure my device returned to normal. I haven't been back to ApkPure since, as only a week or two before I'd discovered Aptoide, which seemed to be a better experience.

That doesn't seem right - the newest version 313.0.0.15.119 from Google Play was updated 3 days ago, it's not old. I'd be suspicious of the higher version numbers.

If Facebook changed the name of Messenger to Work Chat there would be news articles about it, but I don't see any.

Also, post moved to correct forum :)

Thanks for moving the post to the correct forum; I'm not familiar with this site.
I have found a few versions above 313.
The first thing I did was search for Work Chat. There is an app with that name, but not at all masquerading as FB Messenger.
Anyway, it seems I have a correct version, and the latest of all the ones I've found.
