    A total noob question.....

I was in an area where I didnt get any signal. I was able to get good wifi.

I figured that I would use my google voice to make calls etc. I noticed that I got extremely poor reception using google voice as well.

I tried going to airplane mode and then turning on wifi, then tried using google voice which told me that I needed to turn off airplane mode to make a call.

I am assuming then that google voice doesn't use wifi connection by default or at all.

Does anyone know how if there is a way to make it work over wifi?
    I tried looking...

I did end up trying skype and that worked great....pretty clear conversation.

Just wanted to know if anyone knew if and how we could make it work.

    Thanks.

    I love your user name.
If Skype worked great, why do you need googlevoice? Just curious. Props for the work around to no reception.

Was a name since my college daze...

Well, with skype, in order to make out going calls to a landline, need to pay money. Its not a lot but I was hoping that using google voice would be free and it basically uses similar technology?

    Thanks.

Well he did say he didn't have a signal. But I'm wondering 'cause I'll be going to Jamaica in Sept. I did download TiKL Touch to talk....that seems cool. Just tested it today.

Yeah, if your going out of the country I can understand.

Maybe try downloading a SIP app that supports google voice.

GoogleVoice isn't VoIP, it is just call forwarding. GV calls are just regular calls relayed through a Google server to use your GV number. The point of doing this is just so that you can effectively share one number across multiple phones, or record detailed call info. GV also has a better voicemail system, which is separate from the shared number and works by your carrier forwarding unanswered calls. There is a VoIP app/plugin for Gmail on desktops, but this hasn't made it to Android yet.

Short answer. No GV on WiFi, but Google indicated maybe someday.

    Ah.
Makes sense now. Was familiar wth the desktop application.

I live in the dallas area and was staying in seal beach (near long beach). Reception was really bad. 0-1 bars and pretty much 1x the majority of the time.

I tried updating the prl while in dallas before I left...failed and couldn't do it. Tried a couple more times but no go. Looks like in the prl thread that its nothing really new....

everyone on the forums has been awesome.

If anyone finds the gv voip app when it comes out...would appreciate the heads up.
