This works on my Verizon S3.
An app called Battery Monitor Widget.
    Download it and open it.
On the bottom right, there is an option that says "tests"
Click on that, then click on "Device information"
Scroll down to the option of "set network type" and choose "CDMA/auto prl". Or perhaps "CDMA".

Now with a caveat, (is that the right term? :) )---and not meaning to scare you, I stated I used it on my Verizon S3 but also my wifes Verizon Note 2 with success.:)
I don't think you will have issues, but just don't want you to get stuck on 3g as I am not familiar with the metropcs device:)
