What's your /system usage? If you are using less than 130 MB, or can get it below that by uninstalling some system apps you don't use, then it should be possible.
I'd suggest wiping the cache from recovery just before taking the nandroid if you want to try this, as CM7 table has a very small cache (don't know what will happen if you try to restore a cache that's larger than the partition, but it won't be helpful in any event).

How is Miui with small /cache partitions? Does it have something like the 06mountdl script used by CM7 or Redux, to redirect market downloads to /data if /cache is too small? Without that you may have problems with market downloads.

My suggestion about cache and nandroid was just that if you were making a nandroid with the stock table and restoring it on CM7, it seemed possible that the cache.img would be larger than the CM7 cache partition. What happens then I don't know - hopefully it would just fail to restore the cache completely rather than anything worse, but I figure that the problem won't arise if you wipe cache before backing up.

Miui will fit on the CM7 Hboot as you call it. The only prerequisite for Miui is that you must have an ext3.

@Hardon, do you think all the Ancore FC's I was having was down to the 5Mb CM7 cache? It just occurred to me.

Your auto-correct should be ashamed of itself :D
acore FC seems to be one of those things it's hard to pin down a single clear-cut cause to, but I've not found anyone link such things to cache size (usually stuff like bad shortcuts or corrupt contact information). I guess a test would be to take a nandroid that has the problem, change memory table, restore, see if it goes away, but I think it might be a long shot. Never know though.

    Which version was doing that?

    Ooooops

The latest Beta7, There'll be a new one out today so I'll try it again. I know what Beta means but others seem to have stability.

What would be a recommended table for Miui if I went custom MTD?

Custom MTD tables for different roms might be a good addition to the dropbox actually guys.

I was wondering whether it would do the same to me (as I'm using CM7 table at the moment), but another large pile of paper has hit my inbox and I'm pretty committed this weekend, so don't think I'll be able to do that test/compare. Let's hope today's beta works anyway.

I've still not bitten the bullet on custom mtds, though since my ROM update rate has slowed I might think more about that. GingerVillain always struck me as a ROM that needed it, especially as I couldn't get the mountdl script to work (came across some other ideas the other day, but as I'm not using that ROM at the moment I can't really use them).

How are downloads from the market? Did you use the mountdl script?

From what I gather it tells downloads to use the data partition instead of cache. But I think its only used on gv and reduce so far, so I don't know if it will even work with miui. How are you finding miui so far?

I have a 5Mb cache an things be fine.

Miui seems very messy as it don't ave an apps drawer but it does run smooooth and nice. I need to start lookin for a kernel though because the battery drain is horrendous! As is the theme I've chosen, I'm simply too slack to clean it off, I'll probally leave Miui on as I'm going to give the phone to my sister, I have a free upgrade an I'm toying with the Desire S, its been rooted but there are no roms for it yet!

In CM7 it goes even a step further with the help of S2E script by moving the download cache to /sd-ext/download. It is optional though.

wit works on most aosp with init.d support
hadron found an issue with gv as it doesnt like the df commands but it should effectively work for any aosp rom with init.d and busybox
