my bad my brain skipped the picture part.

  5. What is it that held you back from turning off mobile network to see for yourself what the effects were?

Inquiring minds need to know. ;)

It will just shut down the entire Verizon mobile network. My guess you will have a few ticked off dorm mates.

If you get a pic text it will still alert you but have a button to download, but it won't download the pic until you turn mobile back on.

ummm the fear of not knowing what exactly it was and what it did when it was off and on prevented me from doing it :)

    and thanks guys
i just heard it saves battery life

is this what they mean by turning off 3g?

because if im using wi-fi in my dorm, i don't need 3g

  10. "..the fear.."

    ok. :D

  11. Your phone will either say "self destruct in 3, 2, 1" or "pull charger plug and throw immediately" :)

You will notice a considerable difference in battery life, especially if the phone is not constantly looking for wi-fi.

I assume your refering to the HTC Mobile widget.

This basically is turning off 3G/2G data services. If you have this and Wifi turned off, you will not be able to surf the web, or get MMS data. Your voice services and TXT services will remain enabled. Your battery life will greatly improve because your phone wont be using its CPU to access internet data.

The only wait to disabled TXT, Sending pics, making calls is to use the Airplane Mode (enabling it) via the widget or holding the Power button down and selecting Airplane Mode. This cuts all data/wireless services off completely. Having Wifi Enabled/disabled has no effect on voice/txting services as that's a whole different wireless spectrum (service).

Hopefully once the phone is rooted we can enabled key features of the "airplane" mode so when I upgrade to a different phone I can give my kid a bad @ss PDA/PDE with no cellular services. =-)

thank you to the two posts above mine :)

so basically it's pointless to have on mobile network with my wi-fi while at home or in my dorm....and if i need to send/download an mms just turn it on and off as i need it...

    hmmm...i like this haha

This is exactly what popped into my head when I read what people were saying about battery life and mobile network. I turned it off and tried sending a pic but it just wouldnt budge, I for one dont think its a fair trade off for a bit more battery life if you unsuspectingly dont receive an mms someone really wanted you to see just cause you wanted to save batt.

  17. That post highlights one of the most important answers to questions about battery life, wi-fi, 3G vs 1G etc on the Eris: experiment until you find what's just right for your usage situations.

There are people here who are in different coverage areas and even different states or provinces every day, maybe several times per day. Their usage is going to be a lot different than those who have an Eris at home, on the road to their job or school 5 or 10 miles away, and then back (unless that person crosses into and out of weaker or non-existent 3G or wi-fi coverage boundaries).

Any advice about how to best tweak things for battery life has to be filtered through the user's unique situation. Post about your coverage bars from place to place, and about that "3G" icon, etc.

Tell us what you do with your phone all day (keep it clean :D) and why you purchased the device, if you in fact know why you purchased the device.

I brought my phone because it was cuteee.
I saw it and loved the look and feel
    and i love it's customization

I use my phone for the standard
    Phone calls
Texting & Sending pics(i send and take pics daily)
to be honest i rarely ever surf the web...and the apps on my phone i hardly use

in fact sometimes i download apps just for the hell of it
I think the reason i got a smart phone as opposed to a multimedia phone was because
the smartphone aspect of it comes into play if i need to find something on the fly
if an issue ever arose...My eris & droid would be able to help me out in a pinch

  19. Sounds like the main reasons I started dating the woman I'm married to now.

customization??? that can get expensive ;)

  22. lol.. yeah, but I didn't mean cosmetic surgery.. just a touch of proper make-up here and there.. dressed very nicely, hair just the way I liked it, etc.

Proposal came on 2nd date. Seems kind of  to most people, but not to us. :)

I've noticed one exception to using Wi-Fi and not 3g/2g. I'm not able to download from the Market. I can search and browse ok, but it won't download until I enable the 3g signal. Anyone else see that?

  24. That might have to do with security settings on the wifi router.
