Is there a way to manipulate a existing spread sheet that a client has sent to me on these phones.

  2. there may be free versions, but i believe the premium version of Documents to Go by DataViz might be your answer.

I believe the full (Paid) version of Documents to Go can edit spreadsheets, but it's not cheap ($14.99). Shead Spreet (yes, that's the correct spelling) looks like it also might work. The Lite version only let's you edit 10x10 square sheets, but the paid version ($3.99) does not appear to have that limitation.

Yup, I use Documents to Go, works great! The paid version, obviously.

No, not "expensive," but relatively so in the world of android apps. I guess we're spoiled compared to the iPhone and BlackBerry camps.

You can also use Gdocs which is free. It is obviously not as robust as Docs2Go, but it can get some things done.
