    I am new to Android.
    I know VLC for Android is not out yet.
    How do I play mkv / avi files ?

    There is a free trial of v player that says it can play those formats.

    You can try rockplayer (this is the on I use)

    Or convert your fiels to h264 using a free program called Handbrake for your pc.

    The default video player in your phone should be able to play such converted videos.
    Or you can use another video player applications, like those suggested above.

    I have mkv'd all of my movies. The resultant file size is around 700mb. Should i be redoing my movies formy Transfor mer at asmaller size?

    Size doesn't matter.
    Put the videos on SD card and see if you can play them with RockPlayer or VitalPlayer.
    If not, then convert them.
