I received a Mugen Power 3.7v 1800mAH li-Polymer battery for the HTC Hero (Sprint) which my phone will not seem to charge. I place the battery into the phone and the second it touches the charger the LED's flash between green and orange. When I use the phones power tool it says the batteries health was "Overheat." It will also say that when not plugged in.

When using a tool to view the batteries health it shows:

    Health: Overheat
    Level: 57
    Technology: Li-ion
    Voltage: 3.765V
    temp -44.9 degrees C

With the stock battery it shows:
    Health: Good
    Level: 14
    Technology: Li-ion
Voltage 3.705V (I've seen this at 4.003V when fully charged.)
    Temp: 29.6 degrees C

Did I recieve a bad battery, or do I need to do something to tell my phone the battery is a Li-Polymer? Thank you for your help :)

sounds like a bad battery to me.... return it ASAP...

    if you are rooted.....
if you still want to try something else...
go into recovery boot... wipe battery data...
    see if that helps.
