why do my apps always reload when i swap back to them from something else? the iphone didn't do this. is anyone else noticing this on at&t version? or any other version?

EDIT: looks like this is a very common issue. looks like htc screwed up multitasking somehow:

EDIT2: here i found a quick 12 second video showing what it does almost everytime i swap between apps. since i was able to find it doing this in a random video this must be a widespread problem. notice how after he chooses the app to swap to, the screen blacks out as it starts to reload the app.

Android close apps when you press back button so confirm you are not closing apps. if your ram memory is over or you activated advanced power saving. I have galaxy Note that works fine for multitasking.

no, i am not closing apps, and it is not a RAM problem. i check RAM, and it happens with just a couple things open

Yeah, this feels very windows phone ish to me. I thought android had true multi-tasking. I have no problems with "true" multi-tasking on Touchpad (cm9).

Yeah when I do it it goes directly to the app but once the app opens it reloads

Just gave this a try. I opened a few different apps pressed the home button and then used the recent apps to navigate back to them. Each time it went back into the app at the point I left it. Also tried while typing this post and it also put be back to where I was with it.

I am experiencing the same issues as you on an unbranded Vodafone UK phone. I hesitate to regard it as a problem as it detracts very little from my overall enjoyment of the phone. The page in question is titled Recent apps rather than Current (as you would perhaps expect with true multitasking) apps so I have always just used that feature as a convenient shortcut to recently used apps.

I'm on the AT&T one X, and everytime I choose a selection in multitasking (recent apps) it ALWAYS flashes a white screen, then reloads the page.. I never really put any thought into this because it does it really fast... But I hardly have any apps, no music and hardly any pictures and RAM is definitely in the high numbers... It's never really a smooth transition going app to app with this multitasking... Nothing to really give me anything real bad to say about this beast.

Just tried it and yeah I have the same issue. Hopefully this will be fixed in an update soon.

I just tried this as well and got a different scenario. Some apps went black and then opened, some apps went white and then opened. Either way it happens fast enough that it doesnt bother me.

Does it not bother you that it always had to reload the web page you were on though when you go back to the browser?

I've been using Chrome beta. Don't really get that problem.

I was switching back and forth between two apps and I noticed something. When it first switched to an app (which had a lot of text on it), I noticed it was a tiny bit blurry. Then it went to the black screen for a second and then reloaded the app and took me back to where I was. I realized though that what you see when you first switch to the app, is not the app running itself, but just a snapshot of the app. Like when you switch to another app it takes a snapshot of what you saw on the app and saves that, but then closes down the app. When you switch back to the app it shows you the snapshot and then loads the app back to where you were. So this seems to not be a bug, but a clear design decision. If this is really the case, than that is pretty upsetting, because that means they may have no intentions of fixing it.

To the people who say they aren't having this issue. Are you positive of this? When it reloads the app it is just a second, and it does take you back to exactly where you were. I've noticed that some apps do this much faster, and sometimes with some it appears to not happen at all. Still though it can be rather annoying, especially when you keep switching back and forth between two or more apps.

And HyperM3, you can't say it doesn't bother you. Have some standards man. I see too many people (I'm not saying necessarily you) let problems like this slide, because they want to pretend their new phone is perfect. We need to let HTC know that this is not acceptable.

The multitasking in Android is a little different. In Symbian S60 , which I used for a few years before moving to Android, one could see which apps are running by pressing the menu button for a few seconds.
In Android, namely ICS, there is only recent apps. This means just that. So it is likely not all apps launched are active once you move out of it .I believe it is not multitasking per se. Just my two cents worth.

Well i had been really loving this phone, but now that i heard about this multitasking issue i see it happening far to often to ignore. For me i rebooted the phone and it seemed to work really well in multitasking at first, but now it has reverted back to having issues. Weather it be a reload of the app or web page it's really annoying when the app always restarts. I had a iphone 4s before, it's multitasking had it's issues, but it seems vastly superior to this. Frankly now i'm waiting to see what happens with the SGIII, if it comes to at&t i may return the one x to try that. But i really do love the one x, it's a really cool phone, if they could fix the multitasking then i would be content to stay. This also needs to happen inside the 30 day return window :(

First off, nobody has the right to tell me what to think or feel. I understand where youre coming from but you cant tell anyone how to enjoy or complain about their phone.

This is my first phone with ICS and I dont know if the multitasking switcher is part of that or part of Sense. Regardless, the phone is very fast in all other facets and the fact that it takes maybe 2/10's of a second to reopen the app when I click on it from the switcher does not bother me. Im more concerned with the fact that I have wifi and bluetooth connection issues.

I have standards and expectations in the areas that affect me most when using the phone throughout the day. Im not expecting anything I purchase in life to be perfect but I have the ability to let minor things slide when there are other major issues to deal with. Having a delay on the switcher choosing an app isnt one of them.

I think and I might be wrong but this is not like a multitask operation. Its more like a reference of what are you where working or looking threw. You can think off it as a place holder it holds the spot where you was so if you go into another apps you can come back to it with out going threw apps looking for a particular app. But the down side is that it refreshes the app so any information has to be put back in.mainly think of it as a computer somewhat when you load a page up or go to a site and the page doesn't come up you hit refresh and the page loads. I could be wrong but thats the way it seems to me.been hammering the device hard to see if there is anything major with phone before my 30 days on att contract.!

To be completely honest I have no idea what you just said. All I know is this issue is pretty annoying and it is certainly a multitasking problem. Multitasking is the feature of being able to swap between apps seamlessly. This problem causes the swapping of apps to be far from seamless.

If all the apps were running in the background, like you want it to, how long do you think the battery would last?
