Help Must an application be running to receive notifications?

I may have already qualified myself as a Droid Eris-ignoramus but..... My fiance got the Droid Eris on it's release date and loves it. She downloaded the Application Killer app and with some prodding by yours truly is pretty methodically in killing the apps she isn't using to free up memory. My thinking is that since she wishes to receive instant notifiations from her Gmail and Facebook apps that she should leave these two, at least, running all the time, is this correct or can these apps be killed (leaving NO apps running in the background) and she still get instant notifications from them? Thanks.
