My contacts disappeared

Half my contacts disappeared. When I went back into account and checked settings I noticed that the permissions for all contacts were disallowed. I don't know what's going on but I want my contacts back. When I went to lookout, it mysteriously said I deleted 440 contacts, so I undid this. But still I'm missing most of my important contacts. Can anyone help?

Keep a 'dummy' Gmail account to store contacts and calender events.

It is free and well worth it.

My son fixed it: when DROID updated it reset my display and non of the contacts under the account were viewable. When we clicked on each account and showed contacts, there they were.
