    I have two files in:-

    /sdcard/notifications

    Old_Phone_2.mp3 (96KB)
    Paramount-Star-Trek-red-alert.mp3 (327KB)

I want to use as my ringtone and notification.

What folder do I put them so that I can get to them from the Android System?

create a folder called "Samsung" on root (of internal and/or external SD card)
within there you can create the following folders:
    Alarms
    Ringtones
    Notifications
    Music

slap the relevant files in the relevant folders and job done tickedy boo.

You don't need root. I place the same folders on my microSD card. And the system picks them up just fine.

    Cheers

They need to be placed in the relevant folders for the handset to know where they are to be used
I've always placed them in a the Samsung folder so they are all in the same place and easier to manage
