Swapped from iphone to Gs8. First android device. Im not incredibly tech savy or anything but I really enjoy the phone and customization...but the texting is awful.

I misspell words all the time and it doesnt autocorrect like the iphone would do. My most common mistake is tge for the. I've chosen the right word from the options avail but it doesnt "learn" this and correct it going forward like an iphone would.

Is there a separate app or something I can tweak in settings to fix this. I find it hard to believe Andriod doesnt have a similar autocorrect like the iphone.

    All help/suggestions much appreciated...

Just download another keyboard app. Try SwiftKey, it's learning, prediction and auto-correct are probably the best out of any keyboard app I've used.
There is also the ability to adjust the height/width of the keyboard to help with the misspelling.

I use a combination of Textra as the SMS app, and Gboard as my always learning keyboard.

I'd expect the Samsung keyboard to correct better than that, but I've used both of the keyboard apps named above and both do it much better than the built-in ones on my tablet (Samsung) or phone (HTC).

If a built in app doesn't do what you want, there is always an alternative - this is one of the good things about Android.
