I do have a way of getting your phone working, though.

    Pay your bill.

If you're signed up for Google Voice, you can make calls from Google Talk inside Gmail. They'll appear to be coming from your GV number.

I have been there. Google voice is an option, but you need data/wifi.
There are other ways to make free calls over your computer (need internet obviously)

My suggestion is text people from Google Voice on your computer to stay in touch. Everythign on GVoice can be handled by your desktop/laptop.
Just blast out the GVoice # to friends and such, via text, and go from there.

If you anticipate this happening again, let vzw know and they can sometimes set up payments to keep your service (short term)
