Root Nanddroid and ROM Manager

To backup a ROM, can you use just ROM manager and avoid going into recovery and using nanddroid backup?

If so, then what is the point of unlocking nanddroid? I know you need to be nand unlocked to remove system apps, but doesn't root explorer do this anyway?

Just some questions I had..

Yes.

Because if NAND wasn't unlocked, you couldn't get into the recovery image or flash one at all for that matter.

Nandroid isn't used for removing system apps. it's for backing up custom flashed ROMs

That's why rootexplorer does it.
