[Need help]Got a new HTC Magic(a few questions)

I recently received an HTC Magic from a friend but it had the HTC Hero version of Android. I restored the factory settings and now when it boots it will show the android green robot and after that it will just go black and i can't do anything.
I am new to android, so if you have any tips, please explain step by step.
I am quite desperate. Please help.
