Help Need help - Never used Android before!

Um... hi!
I just bought the LG Optimus today in store and the bloke who sold it to be told me I may need to investigate updating the Android on there to the higher model.
Already installed is Android 1.6 and he said I could get it updated to
Android 2.0 (?)

Is this possible and if so how do I do it?

Sorry if there is already hundreds of these threads but I thought it would be better to ask directly.

It goes from 1.6-2.1 , though if you can get 2.1 officially depends on where in the world you live and what mobile phone operator you use as some have released 2.1 before others.

Use the software in the link below to check for official updates, you will need to connect your mobile to your pc using the usb cable after the software has installed.

Once flashed to 2.1 you cannot go back to 1.6

Aren't those official LG roms, just not released for every country?

They look official roms to me and contain apps from LG ( those from the LG site )
