    Do the following from Recovery:
    - Factory Reset
    - Wipe Dalvik Cache
    - Format Boot/System/Cache (from the advanced menu)

I would also re-download the ROM just in case it was corrupted during the download.

You might have to reinstall the stock Android 2.1 RUU which is available here along with HTC Sync: HTC Mobile Phone Support - HTC Hero? (Sprint) - Downloads .

Just install HTC Sync and then run the Android 2.1 RUU executable. If your handset is not recognized you might have to go into Device Manager in Windows and uninstall and reinstall drivers. Sometimes running the Android 2.1 RUU executable twice also gets it working. I had to when I updated to Android 2.1 a while back.
