Okay so i have rooted my Motorola Defy to Android 2.2.1 and i was told that in order to get custom roms i need to download clockworkmod. I did so. then i was told that i need to flash it and reboot in recovery mode. I have tried and tried and tried. Please tell me how to do this. If someone could provide me with the right information as to what to do after i downloaded cwm that would be great ^_^!!

also i tried rebooting while holding down the volume button down and that just shows a little android character and a ! sign.

Be very careful and make sure you have a backup before doing ANYTHING! When that android icon and plus sign comes up you would press on that little image to get to the recovery mode for the phone. I don't know if that's how you access clockwork mod recovery. I think there is also a selection in clockwork mod recovery app to reboot directly to recovery. Make sure you are in clockwork mod recovery not the default android recovery. Search a search engine for how to access clockwork mod recovery on motorola defy you should find the button combo. Good luck. Was your defy rooted before going to 2.2.1? I have a motorola Defy which I bought a month ago which had 2.2.1 by default. I want to root it But I don't know how, and everything I find is how to get 2.1.1 to 2.2.1 without losing root. I need to know how to go from unrooted 2.2.1 to rooted 2.2.1 if its possible

Try this. Just install and run. Been trying for days to root my Defy. This actually worked. Couldn't believe it was so easy. MUCH easier the my G1. Luck....

if you cant get it that way...I thought Gingerbreak was for GINGERBREAD and we cant get 2.3 for defy yet.. look for a file called DoRootWin_2.1.4 its a batch file..as long as you drivers are in for your phone just follow the directions there is a u tube video for support and how to..It will keep trying until it cracks it.. it will update your SuperUser and then get superuser app and test I test with an app called SetCpu..it needs Root access to run..
I did mine with the autofile way...
Certain versions of super one click have been known to work better with certain FROYO phones... another words olderone may work better than new one..
When you upgrade to Froyo it should close the LOOPHOLE that allowed the Eclair root..probably have to root again..

All it seems to do is root the phone. Has nothing to do with Gingerbread. Since it's an apk file it's a one click and see if it works for you.

If you find custom recovery for defy, be very careful, the older version can boot loop you if you press "install recovery" a second time! I think the latest version fixes this. USB debugging off before using it!

I'm not sure if this is new information for you or not...

From the droidman/! icon you just push in the lower right hand corner of the screen to access the Recovery screen. From there you should be able to flash update files, ROMs and kernels. I have not tried it on my Defy (work phone) yet but it looks just like the screen that I have flashed from a hundred times on my D1.

That doesn't always work. It didn't for me, no matter where the screen was touched. Other options to try: When booting wait for blue LED to light then hit volume down, or try pushing both volume up and down at the same time, both of which worked on mine. Different Defy's get to recovery different ways. Who knows why....

clockworkmod doesnt support the defy. you need to download system recovery which is a modded version of clockwork mod. this will allow you to use clockwork recovery. superoneclick is how i rooted my defy on version 2.2.1 and 2.2.2.

Here's what you need. When 1st booting wait for blue LED, then hit volume down and it'll take you into recovery. Click on recovery you want to use. Includes ClockworkMod 4.0.1.6.
