    jlromero, welcome to the family...
Rooting gives you full access to the OS root directory. Voodoo allows you to reformat your file system from RFS to EXT, much faster, ROMs allow you to have a custom look about your phone, like changing the battery from the dull battery symbol to a cool percentage and droid symbol, it also gives you the ability to de-bloat your store installed crap-ware from VZW. Here are the best places to start the adventure:

Awesome! I see now.. I was thinking that it required to install roms and all that reformatting to complete the task.. Know I clearly see that I really want to aim towards the voodoo thing u mentioned .. Ill look more into it ..

... I wonder why did samsung decide to choose the RFS file system over the EXT?...

If things go as planned, Gingerbread will require the new OS to reformat to EXT. The SGSII has EXT, at least that is what I read... So that is where Samsung is heading, the benchmarks will go up with the EXT conversion.

What's the difference between a kernel and a ROM?

ROM: Read Only Memory. This is the entire OS/Apps that are loaded (flashed) to memory to run the device. Custom ROM
