Hey guys, I have been a lurker for a while and have a STOCK 2.2 droid x.

I am looking for some serious noob help on how to root my phone and slap a nice rom on it to kill the bloat ware, give my battery a longer run and speed the darn thing up. I have been running stock ever since I bought it and didn't know it could be better. I was going to sell it this summer for a faster phone but Shouldn't need to once I put a custom rom on it and tweak it.

I have NO idea how to do this from scratch...phone..USB cable..and a windows PC......

Please help me with any links, directions, files you can....

and forgive my ignorance as I learn.
help me do this the easiest way if you can. treat me like a stupid person.

Nothing to forgive. All of us are tripping over ourselves to help newbies! :)

Firstly, I'd like to make sure the version of android you have. You said you had 2.2. The latest is 2.2.1. It would be helpful to get to that before you start in with rooting. Let us know! :)

To find out, go to settings-about phone and android version. Tell us if you see 2.2 or 2.2.1. If 2.2, then in settings-about phone, select system update.

    Download titanium backup:
    https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&feature=search_result

Once opened grant root access (it will ask you).

Then select the settings button. Select batch operations. We're going to make a batch backup of all your user apps, NOT SYSTEM APPS.

Select "RUN" "Backup all user apps", then select "run the batch operation"

Wait for it, it will take awhile.

After this you'll need to download two apps. Droid X bootstrapper and Rom Manager. Let me know when you've done all this, then we'll deal with these two apps above. :)

Go into Droid x bootstrap. Make a backup of your 2.2.1

To do this, first hit bootstrap recovery. After you get the "ok", hit the second button down. That will put you into bootstrap recovery...

When there, using the volume buttons toggle down to backup and restore. Select that by hitting the camera button. Then select "backup" and backup your 2.2.1 by hitting the camera buttom

Let me know when you've done that. That's your insurance backup in case of trouble.

you need to download all 3
and plug your phone in to your computer through usb
    and enable mass storage protection
drag and drop the 3 zipped files to the root of your sdcard, which is the beginning of your sdcard that opens up when you open the removeable drive through the computer
then unplug your phone from pc and

    then open droid x bootstrapper
    hit bootstrap recovery
    give superuser permission
    hit ok for success
    then hit reboot recovery
scroll to wipe data/factory reset with the volume down button
then scroll to yes with the volume down button and to select it hit the camera button
then wipe cache the same way you did with factory data reset
then go to install zip from sdcard
    then choose zip from location
    and install
    PT1 FIRST
then when its done go back to choose location
    and install
    PT2
then when its done go back to choose location
    and install
    PT3
then when its done hit the back button
    and reboot phone
it takes a while for it to boot so be patient

Also the file YOU downloaded is not the gingerbread, it is the deodexer. Don't use it!

My page has the links to all three parts of the download. The file you downloaded? Throw it out. Trust me.

Here's the page again. Let me know if you have any questions.

New DROIDX Gingerbread 4.5.588 Rooted - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

Worst comes to worse, if your phone gets stuck, any one of us will be glad to help you recover.

Important point, make sure in case you get stuck, your phone has a good charge or else you'll need to charge your battery in another phone. So, keep plugged into a charger.

yes, I want you to do the recovery backup I illustrated above. It backs up the entire 2.2.1 system, not just the apps. DO THIS FIRST AS INSURANCE!

Also, as I said, make sure you stay up to date with a good charge.

Here are the steps to backup your entire 2.2.1 rom, again.
