Hello to all, I am using the Htc Evo on Sprint running Cyanogenmod 7.0.3.1. I am lucky to get 8-15 hours on a full charge. I am running SETcpu which seems to help a bit especially when running the phone at 245mhz for the processor. It's been a while since I've flashed roms and am looking for a better rom/kernel to get better battery life.

IMO, at this point seems to be about equal across the board with the latest roms... i am running MikG v2.5 with Golden Monkey 1.1 and am getting about 10 to 12 hours... fortunately i am not away from a power source longer than that so that battery life suits me fine... plus, this combo runs like butter...:D

what kernel are you using? i would recommend tiamat sbc kernel. also you do not need to use setcpu with cm7. it has its own built in. also what governor are you using? try the smartass governor. cm7/tiamat combo has given me the best battery life. i was getting 18-35 hrs of moderate to heavy usage. but combo's will vary from phone to phone.

I was running the stock Kernal for a while but as everybody know's that doesn't work the greatest. I have tried Tiamat but with no luck, in fact I was getting worse battery life then I was running stock. I am currently running 2.6.38.8 GodMode. I have tried the ondemand which seems to keep the phone processor at 999mhz, where as i would set it to Powersave I had it set down to 245MHZ which did make a huge different. I don't see an option for the Smartass governor?

I checked out that kernel. It isn't an sbc kernel.

The sbc kernels allow the battery to charge more fully if you leave the phone on and let it charge, like overnight, for instance. Like 10% more, I have read.

As has been mentioned, you don't have to use setcpu with cm7/tiamat. If you have that, and maybe with your kernel, as well, when you go into phone settings you see something called Cyan... Settings. Click on it and you will see "performance settings'. Click on that and you get a warning, just be careful. Right at the top of that list is stuff like max and min cpu freq settings and it allows you to choose your governor. In this case, Smartass is cool. It seems to act like a screen off profile in setcpu, built in.

another battery saving idea is JuiceDefender from the market. It turns your radios on and off intermittently, as well, so your phone is not constantly hunting for a signal in weak areas. it just pops it's head up and gets the info periodically. Set in balanced mode it 'balances' battery saving with you getting your emails in timely fashion.

some folk just completely turn their 3g off until they want it for something. i can't remember what that does to emails but texts and phone calls still get through.

Also, how much stuff do you have syncing, and how often? you can change how often in settings and that will help.

also, have you updated your prl and profile, in that order? that is supposed to help too.

Definitely know tiamat with sbc will add to your battery life.

Ok I have questions, I thought I read somewhere that the SBC Kernels were causing batteries to blow up and or ruin them?

Second, I went under Cyangenmod settings and I found where you choose your min, max mhz, I went up to governors and still don't see the smartass one?

three, there is no way to turn off 3G. I know you can disable the data side, but if you click on that, then go back and check your phone status you are in fact still connected to EVDO-Rev A. instead of just simply 1X.

I have yet to read anything about someones battery blowing up or ruin them....All i've ever seen was precautionaries that it COULD POSSIBLY degrade your battery life over time and worst case if the battery damaged the phone...but like i said, i have not read one confirmed case of either of them happening....i run sbc kernels on every AOSP rom and havent had any problems yet...

im pretty sure that the smartass one is the default setting....do you see any other settings available or does it tell you which one its on right now?

It shows me as ondemand which is the default one. It has a list but I don't see the smartass one on there? I'm guessing that one is kernel dependent?

I guess it is possible your battery will blow up. Mine hasn't. Lots of guys in here seem to have used it with good results. I wouldn't do anything I didn't feel comfortable with.

Maybe the smartass governor is only available with the tiamat kernel. I think there was a tiamat kernel there w/o sbc as well, never used it. One I use, with sbc, has smartass. I think. playing with partitioning and a2sd right now, but pretty sure. I am on cm7, as well, think there might be different flavors of it, as well.

i am under the impression that the turning off data turns off 3g, I am thinking too that juicedefender sort of toggles it on and off periodically.

I don't know where you are looking to see that connection thing, up in the notification bar? I know that mine, under network in settings/ about phone shows that the mobile network i am on is cdma-evdo rev a, but i am thinking that w1th data off, I am using the 1x or cdma side of the network.

Someone correct me if i am wrong, plz.

Try a tiamat sbc kernel ....you should be getting killer battery life... not sure whats up. Also dload V6 supercharger script and if you have SETCPU make a screen off profile. I was getting crazy battery life with this. I know phones vary ... but not this much! You should atleast be able to get 15+ hours with heavy usage. I bet I could go 2 days with my extended battery. Keep us informed.

BTW ... if your running a task manager .. get rid of it! Only thing I recomend is Juice Defender.

ok. I have flashed the regular non SBC Tiamat 4.0.8 Kernel to see if anything changes but I do now have an option under governors Smartass and Smartass V2. Also When i had the other kernels and was using setcpu I had a screen off profile along with the phone in powersave mode. The phone's max Processor speed was capped at 245MHZ which didn't seem to do much. If you turn off your 3G data, from the home screen-->menu--Settings-about phone--click on Status (This is only on AOSP rom's I Believe). If that isn't enough to show ya try sending a text message after you turn off your 3G, you'll see the bars change. :)

I'm giving the non SBC Kernel a try to see. I did have a question. When I go to the performance menu under Cyangoenmod settings. Do I check the set up boot option or leave it unchecked?

a good idea to leave set at boot off until you know your phone can handle what you are setting it up for, otherwise it bootloops and is a pita. :p

ok I'm glad I left it unchecked then. I don't like boot loops lol. So far I don't notice any difference in battery life while using Tiamat 4.0.8.

No I haven't tried it yet. Is it any better than just the regular smartass governor?

well i always say that newer is better. not exactly sure what the difference is yet. gonna have to go back to cm7 and try this kernel out.

and just an fyi, it is totally safe to flash a sbc kernel. disregard anything that you have read. some of that is in theory, but in reality it does seem to give better battery life for most people. and even if it did ruin your battery, they are cheap these days. you can get one on amazon for less then $5.

Well I'm having another problem. I am not getting phone calls. Sometimes it rings and shows a missed call, other times it doesn't ring at all and shows no missed calls. I don't know what's causing it. I'm using the smartass governor. I did notice when I was using setCPU it was also doing the same thing. Is it a min cpu setting?

Could be. Try bumping your minimum frequency from 245 mhz to 384 or whatever the next lowest setting is.

Furthermore, Smartass V2 is supposed to help with phone wake issues. I'm not sure how it works exactly, but that's what I read on XDA. I never have any issues with my phone waking up on Smartass, but I have seen others comment that they have seen issues. You could always use SetCPU and use the interactive governor and set up a screen off profile or something if you still see issues with a higher minimum frequency on smartass or the 245 mhz minimum on Smartass V2.
