NEVER ask a dev for an update/release date...

My intentions in posting this are good and I am trying to help some of the members out that might not know better...

There was a point in time that I didn't know this so I figured I would help the members that don't know and save them the trouble.

I have set back and watched what happens when a member asks a developer for an update, release date, time frame of when to expect a finished product, and a word on when they will be working on something. These questions only add to the anxiousness of the situation and always ends badly.

IMO developers dump their hearts into their work and IMO when a developer makes some progress that would be helpful to share with members and or supporters I guarantee you that their "NOT" gonna say to themselves "this is some bad ass progress and everyone is gonna love to hear this BUUUUUT I'm gonna keep it to myself." IMO a dev is just as excited about sharing progress on their work as you are about hearing and or benefiting from an update.

I can't tell you how many time I have been SO EXCITED about an update that I made my home page the thread that was gonna be updated and every freakin' 15 minutes I would hit F5...F5...F5...over & over. So I completely understand the excitement around dev's releasing their work but you have to allow them the right to update us on their schedule.

Maybe we should make a newbs guide to help inform/explain things not to do or say? Lol

No offense to the OP but why is this even being posted? I think this goes without saying...

In a perfect world it would be true. But I've still seen people ask in the forums and also in the IRC channel.

Just simply let them know whats goin on, that's it. Because this will eventually fall to the bottom of the forums and disappear.

I've seen Dev's walk away from the development. The guys that D2a worked on the LG Ally with making velocity, stopped all production for about 3 months (D2A correct me if i'm wrong on the time frame) because 1 person asked for an update 3 times in 2 weeks.

I think this thread should be stuck at the top. :)

Then I would agree if it stays at the top of the forums, to be seen by all new comers.

Its not like the devs are getting paid to do what their good at best. I can totally understand the situation, I would get mad if I was a dev and someone asked me persistently for an ETA, its like insulting the them (one could take it like the dev isn't working their butt off hard enough).

Good warning, keeps the newer members like me aware, although I've already read through the forums and figured this out :p.

Excellent reminder but making this a sticky would be pointless as those typically asking haven't read the stickies and they don't know the "unwritten rules."

Easiest way to handle it is to just politely explain to them that asking for ETA's don't help anything and explain why. Then they known and can understand the reasons for it. :D

There's nothing wrong with asking a dev how progress is going or how the project is coming along. You just have to go about it the right way.

Every dev I know really enjoys developing. if they didn't, they wouldn't be doing it. Devs also like to talk about developing, but if you just want to know when they're going to be done, I don't blame them for getting angry.

Not asking for an eta is an unwritten rule, but devs also have to understand its only natural for people who really like their work to be curious. The general population has no clue what actually goes into developing a rom/kernel/ect.

As kelmar said there is no point to this being a sticky :) but people will see it
