Actually, this perplexed me since 4:45pm today after I installed the update. The trackball and buttons just refused to light up at ALL for me, and I couldn't figure out wtf was happening. Then it hit me to just try something for shits and giggles. I covered the light sensor with my thumb. HOLY EFF--- the trackball and buttons lit up. I took my thumb off, OH MY GOD WHAT THE-- they turned back off. This also applies to when you're playing a video, or looking at pictures, or even playing a game or browsing the web. I think honestly, it was better off before, but this works as well.

Man, you need to stop asking this same question in dozens of places. It's been answered again and again.

When the phone is in a lighted room, the trackball and button lights are OFF.

When the phone is in a darkened room, the trackball and button lights are ON as long as the phone is ON. It doesn't care that you are watching a movie with it, it's dark, the lights are ON.

There are applications in the market that can override this. Go search for them. See if they work.

But please, stop asking the same question over and over in every forum.

Why would you think the answer would be different? Leaked 2.1 and RUU are the same. Couldn't you have just turned the lights on and off in your room and tested for yourself? And why does it require posting the same question over and over? Do you even read anything, or do you just post? It's a forum, not your personal help desk.

Use your head man, think a bit before you start typing. And save the clever comments for someone else.

dude dont you think ive done that. also, if you check youtube videos u clearly see their phones' buttons sleep...with or without lights on. so no, its not a normal function of the phone. this is a problem on both leaked and now official 2.1...2 different OS that happened to be released shortly after each other...so if theres a fix, i wanna know. or if other ppl have this problem then maybe we can resolve this...thanks for your positive input...take care...and thanks for complimenting my clever comments.

Not really.... the buttons turn both on and off during video playback both from you tube and straight from SD. It's based on the light sensor dude, which is the little semi-translucent shape on the right of the ear piece.
