Running rooted Froyo. When I copy an APK to /system/app, it is not detected by the phone, even after rebooting. I've tried with the Mobile Defense apk, several live wallpaper apks, and a few others. I copy them into /system/app/ using root explorer, reboot the phone, and the apps never show up in the launcher (or in the case of live wallpapers, the live wallpaper chooser). What's up with that?
