Help New Atrix and Pandora is 'skipping' with screen off... best solution?

When my screen is locked and off on my new Atrix Pandora will 'skip' and I think it's a CPU clocking issue. I'm running the latest updates to the phone so am on Android 2.3

When the phone is unlocked it will skip occasionally, but not near as bad as when the phone is locked.

Has anyone else seen this? I can't see how removing and reinstalling Pandora like I've seen in a few posts doing a search will help. This is a brand new phone and Pandora was used once and skipped straight away.

I have tried changing Battery "modes" so see if one would help over another and they all seem to allow the skipping.

I'm disappointed that a phone this fast has issues like this. Everything else is stellar with the phone aside from Pandora skipping. How can an old iPhone 3g on teh same cell and wifi network not skip but this phone does? :(

Edit:
I have removed Advanced Application Assistant and have removed and reinstalled Pandora and it is still skipping during music and even the ads that play.

I've made sure that Pandora and any Gallery or Media apps ares not in the stock auto end list.

I'm still hearing the skipping. It's like a processes starts up and spikes the CPU for a split second while Pandora is playing. I can get the phone to perform the same skip if I open up a demanding app while playing Pandora in the background.

Is there a Task Manager tool that can show what process just ran or started in the background that I can use to watch to see which app just increased load on the phone?

Thanks for help. :)

Try Elixir2
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bartat.android.elixir&feature=search_result

When you launch Elixir2, go to RUNNING to see all running processes. Then, on the top of that screen tap the right arrow a couple of times to get to the TOP list. This will show you the TOP CPU/Memory hogs in real time. It even includes system processes.

Is there logging at all, or would I just watch the display while listening to Pandora and see what is at the top of the list during a skip?

I'm not sure. I've never seen a logging option in there.
I do know that if you hit the large arrow at the top of the screen (That looks like a PLAY button), you can send a report of the info on that screen to an email address. But, that's a snapshot log of that moment in time, not a history log.

I do know this. If your free memory get's below about 45MB, the system starts killing off processes in the background to free it back up.

Media players, especially streaming like Pandora, use a lot of memory. My theory is still that you have a lot of processes (mainly services from apps) running, each eating a little bit of memory. However, it's enough that, by that time you toss a large memory user into the pool, you start getting below that 45MB free memory limit. So, the system process kicks up, using the CPU while it tries to clean up the apps/services not being used (The things on the AutoKill list go first).

This is why I was saying to go in and STOP those apps/services manually (Not put them on the Autokill list). Take a proactive step so the system does not have to be reactive.

Thanks for letting me know about that Pandora update. :)

I just installed Elixer2, updated Pandora and shutdown, pulled battery and powered up and it's skipping.

Edit: I should note that it skips all the time. When I origionally posted I thought it was only when the screen was asleep or off, but it's consistent and is 1-3 times per song.

As far as running apps, when I look at Task Manager the running applications are:

ESPN Scorecenter CPU 6% RAM: 5MB
LauncherPro CPU 1% RAM 17MB
Pandora CPU 1% RAM 17mb
Bookmark Widget CPU 1% RAM 3mb
Gmail CPU 0% RAM 6mb
FFL 11 CPU 0% RAM 5MB
Maps CPU 0% RAM 5MB
Market CPU 0% RAM 5MB
News and Weather CPU: 0% RAM: 4MB
Appy Geek CPU 0% RAM 3MB
Beyondpod CPU 0% RAM 3MB
Vlingo CPU 0% RAM 3MB
Youtube CPU 0% RAM 3MB
Mytracks CPU 0% RAM 2MB
ShopSavy CPU 0% RAM: 2MB
Worldclock CPU 0% RAM 2MB
Zedge CPU 0% RAM 2MB
Battlenet Authenticator CPU 0% RAM: 1MB
Flashlight CPU: 0% RAM 1MB

When it skips in a song Elixer's Top view is showing the following as the top applications:

(this stays at the top consistently):

com.motorola.blur.service.main

(The following processes float in order beneath com.motorola.blue above):

/system.bin.mediaserver

system_server

top

/system/bin/mdm_panicd

Wow. That report that you can send is amazing - thanks for letting me know about that. I just have no idea how to interpret the info.

Here is a report that I just took during a skipping song with Pandora running in the background:

Edit: Holy crap that % for com.motorola.blur.service.main must be a bug! I noticed it was in a red font when I took the report but damn.

I just changed my "Wifi Sleep Policy" to Never as that was suggested as a fix. I couldn't find the settings earlier and forgot to ask where to make the change.

I found them here for anyone following this thread:
[Settings > Wireless & networks > Wi-Fi Settings > press "Menu" > Advanced > Wi-Fi Sleep Policy]

I'll report back if this helps with skipping. I hope to God above that it does.

I've gone through and killed all non Android apps and even Maps and My Tracks, etc. but they come right back up in the apps list. I'm not willing to uninstall my ESPN apps to get Pandora running so if I can't get it running I guess the phone goes back. :(

Well, looking at those reports, it's not the phone's CPU or memory.

The problem has to be in the data stream. That could be anything from the WiFi signal, to the wireless router, to the modem... to problems upstream at your ISP.

Do you have the option turned on for the highest sound quality? If so, try testing it with that on the lowest sound quality. That uses much less bandwidth.

If it does not skip on the lower setting, I would look at your wireless router. There could be something in it that's chopping up the signal.

That was my first thought was well and I confirmed that my audio quality was set to the lowest level. My 3 year old iPhone 3g has been using Pandora on the Wifi connection here at work and at home and on the train commute in between daily for three years and I never had connectivity issues before.

I also see the same problem sitting at my desk on Wifi and at the same place turning wifi off. I see the same behavior regardless of where I am or what WAP I'm connected to and the issue follows me regardless of whether I am on Wifi or cellular.

I don't think it's bandwidth related.

Should I ask Amazon Wireless to ship me a new phone at this point? I wonder if this one has a hardware issue. :(

Unless you can prove there is something wrong with the phone itself, they won't replace it because one app is having streaming issues.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the phone, hardware wise.

Have you tried any of the other streaming services to see if they skip to? Say Jango, or the "Radio.com" app that streams AOL radio.

If those don't skip, then it's a problem within the Pandora app. That's not a warranty replacement problem related to the phone. You would need to contact Pandora's support for help.
I use Jango, Radio.com, Pandora and even the Sirius/XM app, all streaming. You will get occasional skips from time to time. I have on every phone I've owned (multiple BlackBerry and Android devices). Heck, I get skips on Pandora on my laptop. It's the nature of streaming media.

But, if you are getting constant skipping within the same song, there is something going on. Like I said, try one of the other apps, and contact Pandora's support.

Thanks Wolfman. Yahoo Music works, but sounds really tinny. I jump to the next track much more often than Pandora used to on my iPhone using the same connectivity, but at least it plays.

Radio.com plays but has a similar but different timing of the 'skipping' sounds in the audio feed. It's the same interupted 'skip' that Pandora had but it's very regular and almost like a metronome is ticking along in the audio feed stopping the audio track in measured clicks or pauses.

Since I'm not seeing these issues mentioned on the Markplace at all (aside from Slacker's crashing issue, it seems like that's a global problem) I'm not really sure what to make of my issue. I see quite a bit of complaints about general music 'skipping' issues on the Atrix when I google search but no real solutions.

I'm starting to think I'm not an Android guy after all. I might just return the phone and be done with it. I've spent more time troubleshooting this phone in the past 3 days than I have with my iPhone in the past 3 years. :(

Let's clarify what you mean by "Skipping"-

When you say "Skipping" that means gaps in the song, a sections of the song repeats (Think record skipping if you are old enough to remember those), or the song SKIPS ahead a few seconds

What you describe in that posts sounds like the music plays consistently, but there is a TICKING sound. Or, am I misunderstanding you?

If it's a ticking sound, that's not skipping. That's a sound quality issue that can come from a poor/loose audio connection, bad headphones, feedback...

Being an "Android" person has nothing to do with it. I don't have anything like you have with my Atrix. Occasionally, I'll get some ticking in the background playing MP3's through my car stereo, but that's feedback from where the input wire runs into the back of radio, and is not shielded from the engine noise properly.

I would still contact Pandora support.

What I'm really experiencing can be replicated at will. It's the same abrupt sound that I used to hear in Winamp on PC's back in the early 90's when the processor just couldn't play the file I was trying to play.

Edit: Forgot to say how to replicate the issue. I can open any window, or let the phone's display dim or auto lock and the music will stutter or 'pop' the resume immediately. It really seems like a load problem.

The music stops with a popping crack sound and then restarts right where it left off. It's sharp 'crack' sound, a split second of silence then the music picks up right where it left off. if the phone wasn't so damn powerful and if I hadn't owned an iPhone 3G for three years that never had this issue, I would think it was a processor limitation issue like back in the day with PC's.

Could the LauncherPro launcher that I'm using be causing issues?

I use Launcher Pro to, so I think we can rule that out.

From the logs you posted, you don't have anything overwhelming the CPU. I really don't think that's what the problem is.

The real issue here is that we may have the same hardware, but there could be any combination of apps that you have and I don't. And, Android, unlike iPhone, does much more Multitasking (iOS4 does some multitasking, but no where near what you have on Android). So, when you listen to Pandora on the iPhone, it's pretty much all the phone is doing. Android is Linux shoved onto a phone. Seriously. We are running the Linux 2.6.32.9 Kernel (Check in Elixir2).

I'm still saying to contact Pandora's support. They will go over all of the apps on your phone, all of your settings. They are more likely to know of compatibility issues with a particular app you may have. Not to mention, they may be able to tell you of a log file Pandora saves on the phone to send them that tells them what's going on.
I know the developers I work with will even give a special build of the app that you replace the one from the market with that does special logging and reporting back to them so they can see what's going on. Once the issue is resolved, you switch back to the Market version of the app. I don't know if Pandora does that or not.
