Am I nuts or does the new camera apk store ONLY to the phone's internal storage. There is no choice for "storage location" to use the SD card (as in the original stock camera)? Really?

If you are talking of the Google Camera app then the answer would be you are correct. Google does not support external memory cards, as such there would be no option to select any MicroSD card you have.

I have a question regarding the new google camera apk.

If I install it in my Maxx HD, does it replace the current camera app or are both camera apps in my phone and I have my choice of which I want to use?

According to what I've read on Droid Life, it sounds like both are there but I'd like to be sure. Has anyone installed the new camera apk and can tell me definitively that both camera app are there?

I'm patiently waiting for my new phone to be released sometime in the summer of 2014.

I can tell you definitively that both are there. However the Google version will not store to your SD card.

Both are there. If you like the moto one better, just uninstall the google cam.

If you like the Google cam better, disable the moto cam app. This will replace the moto cam app on the lock screen with the google cam app. Thats what I've done.

I've noticed it also replaces the Gallery app, too. Didn't care for how it worked, so I uninstalled.
