Got my new white Evo from Best Buy today, hardware rev 0003, Android 2.2 (bummer), and I think the Epson screen. There's a lot to learn, not all of which is intuitive, this forum has been a great help.

I didn't notice any dust under the screen or cracks around the volume or power buttons yet. The micro USB port seems ok out-of-the-box, though it makes me nervous -- I could see how it might eventually loosen up. Other phones I've had have had extremely smooth UI's, so I noticed the effects of the 30fps cap right away. Even compared to my wife's Hero there was a big difference. It really bugged me at first, but now that I've used the phone for a few hours it doesn't seem as bad. I read that using something like LauncherPro will smooth things out, at least on the home screens. The battery has definitely been an issue, it's almost dead after 7 hours of light usage. I started to implement some of the battery tips, hopefully that'll help. One other thing I'm nervous about - having to press the power button to wake and sleep the phone, especially with all the reports of cracking around the power button. I'm a heavy mobile device user, that's a lot of power button presses in a day.

I did notice some light leakage. I can only see it if I'm in a dark room and have the top of the phone somewhat tilted towards me, but it's definitely there. Seems like a manufacturing problem to me, and I'm surprised that there are reports of people not having this problem. I would think it would be everyone or no one. Honestly I was hoping with hardware rev 0003 that I'd get lucky and not have this problem. It's my understanding that HTC or Sprint won't do anything about it, so I guess if I want this phone I'm stuck with it.

I have a few questions about this issue:

    - Does having the light leakage mean dust will start getting under my screen?

    - For phones that have slight light leakage, is that a sign that the screen will start to separate? Does the problem basically stay as it is, or does it worsen over time?

    - If it's everyone's experience that the issue is what it is and doesn't worsen, I was thinking of just getting a case that covers the seam between the screen and case. I really like the Case Mate barely there case, especially the protection it gives the camera, but it doesn't cover the seams at the top and bottom of the phone. So I'd be looking for something like the Case Mate, but that covered more of the top and bottom.

    - Is it everyone's opinion that there will be a root method for Evo's that came with factory-installed Froyo? Like, within 30 days? As great as it is, I can only see myself holding onto this phone if it will be rooted. I want to install a ROM that has the 30fps cap removed, and I'm interested in trying out a vanilla Android experience. I also believe some of the video recording tweaks that are finding themselves into ROMs now are necessary.

    - I found a utility to allow the volume buttons to wake the phone instead of the power button, which is good. Is there any way to use the capacitive buttons to do this? Something like long press on the Home button to light up the screen?

So I'm really not sure what to do. I'm worried about the bottom seam + light leakage getting worse, and the fact that I may be stuck with a never-to-be-rooted device. I'm definitely open to any advice anyone has.

I think it's called No Lock. There are some others but this one is free. A little annoying though - it makes a sound when you use the volume button to wake the screen, and there seems to be no way to disable it.

Dude, post this under reviews because the rest of us have more important things to read under announcement. We don't need an announcement that you got a new phone. If there is something wrong, take the phone back. Its like people come here to complain, I would just take the phone back. Problems solved. The whole android forum doesn't need the 411 on your phone/imagination. Thx

Ok I apologize, I thought this was the general forum. There don't seem to be any announcements here, just people asking questions and other general things like 4g speeds, HDMI not working, what's the best browser, comparing to Pre, I dropped my Evo, etc. I didn't think this belonged in reviews since my main purpose was to ask the questions about light leakage, rooting, and alternative ways to wake the screen. If you still think I should move it I will, sorry for wasting your time.

BTW if you want the Evo to seem quicker/smoother. Download an app called Spare Parts. Then under the General settings, change Window animations and Transition animations both to fast.

No need, the only mistake you made was starting a new thread. The forum police hate new threads but instead of ignoring them they take the time to be pretentious aholes. A pretty good G1 forum was ruined by this type of childish behaviour.

    YMMV but here's my experience:
I know exactly what you mean when you are talking about the light leakage in a dark room since I have that slight leakage too. I have had my phone for almost 2 months now and there has been no issue! No dust, no screen separation, everything works fine. Sometimes there's a clicking sound when I long press on the bottom left of the screen, it has been doing this since 2 months now but it has stayed the same for me. I was relieved to find out that if something hardware related issue occurs then HTC will take care of it for 1 year. So I am good with that. The battery as per my experience is kinda bad for the first 1 week and then gets better and better after applying some of the tricks mentioned in this forum! My volume buttons are slightly squeaky but not enough to bother me but that problem is kinda solved with my silicon/plastic case that I am using for the phone.

Enjoy your new EVO! I am sure you will like it more and more ;)

I am looking for something like this too... just the capacitive buttons!
