So today I am finally getting an Eris and was wondering if any of you have any tips that you wish you would have known when you first bought your phone?

Anything that I should or shouldnt do that will help the phone stay quick and snappy in a month as it is on day one?

Any applications that are a must have that you now cannot live without?

    Anything helps! Thanks!

The first thing I would do is upgrade it to 2.1. Like CaddyMan said follow the sticky's. I wouldn't download a bunch of apps until you do that. IMO

Well having been someone who has forced updates on previous phones I would rather just wait for the OTA. There will be an OTA of 2.1, correct?

supposedly by the end of Q1(March 31st) there is supposed to be an update for 2.1 OTA.
The leaked version we all have is a little buggy, if you can wait, hold out a little longer

Yeah like I said, Ill probably just end up waiting for the official release. Just kinda how I am.

So after reading though someof the stickies I saw the post in the "tips and tricks" about switching between htc sense and the regular android look. Once changed to the original android style is there anyway to change back to the sense ui?

I'd advise you NOT to manually update to the leaked 2.1, its to buggy for a new user, especially if your not a techy, dont bother. just wait for the Over The Air (OTA) update to 2.1 and you'll be fine.

READ the stickies for all other tips.

If you want your phone so stay quick and snappy try bedazzling it... I think this worked for caddyman... hey caddyman did you post that walkthrough on this yet. :p

Not gonna lie, the bedazzling sounds promising.

2.1 has been the best thing since sliced bread for me but I'd say wait because if cutting edge is not your personality, you'll be one of those who are begging to downgrade and such.
There's enough excitement in a new Android to hold you over till the 2.1 update.

I actually think the updating process could help you learn more about your phone. I'm 99.9 percent sure that if you update to the leaked 2.1 you will still get the OTA. Its a no lose situation. Follow the stickies, use the search features, and welcome to the family.

  15. Good on ya.

Your new Eris has 1.5, which I have, and it works fine and is solid as can be.

Those with the leaked, unfinished 2.1 vary in their reports of its reliability, etc. There are hundreds of postings in the "bugs and fixes" thread for it.

    http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/50542-eris-2-1-leak-bugs-fixes.html

Most using the leak want company; they'll advise Eris users to install it.

He asked for real/practical advice, not an opinion. I don't think upgrading to a buggy leaked release is such a good idea for a new Eris user.

I think by very definition advise is opinion. and the upgrade is a simple process (especially since the OP has experience in updating their phone by themselves) The leak isn't buggy. Every OS has its issues (youtube anyone?) So its a trade off IMO.

  18. It can be a trade off, as you say.

But enter into the equation the fact that there are people who just stick to the official versions of things such as updates to their devices, etc. We're just that way, as the thread starter stated in a later post.

The merits, or lack thereof, of the leaked download is secondary to us.

Well said. Its great that we have this choice, and I, as I'm sure you, are pleased with the decisions we've made. Everybody wins!

I'm fairly new to the Eris too, had it about a month now. I've tweaked different phones in the past but I'm waiting on the OTA this time. The leaked is buggy, everyone that has it says it's great except for this or that not working right. Update to the leaked, rad more on these forums and decide for yourself. As for must have apps, I don't think there are any true must haves. It depends what you like. Just go to the market and start searching. download what your interested in not what others are interested in.
