Found this on the HTC Forum 15 minutes ago...

Here is something semi official from an Admin on the Sprint forum :

"Actually, the firmware update was done by HTC and released a while ago. It's not an OS update, just a small patch to fix some bugs. Google has written Android 2.1 - a far larger update than a firmware patch. Think Windows 95 to Windows XP. HTC is validating Android 2.1 on the Hero hardware and updating the drivers such. They're also updating the Sense UI. Sprint will get the completed package from HTC at some point and run our standard set of tests.

Assuming all that passes cleanly, it'll be available, possibly as an OTA, certainly as a desktop download and update to Android 2.1 When? No later than end of June (1H) this year. February? No idea. None at all. Sorry - I have no information at all on that. As I've mentioned, watercooler talk indicates that testing (somewhere) is going well.

Why not 1.6? Because it's the same amount of work to update to 1.6 as it is to update to 2.1. 2.1 is the latest and greatest version available from Google. By spending the time now to get ahead of the curve, our phones will be 'up to date' for at least 3 or 4 months before something newer and shiny-er comes out."

Actually, from the tons of questions here on a daily basis about the 2.1 updates, it would appear ALOT of people dont already know this and will appreciate the info.

    so sometime by june?

no different than the 1H we already heard

personally, i'm more interested in the leaked 2.1 rom and any bonus the newly released kernel will bring to us in the meantime. XDA devs offer us more than HTC/Sprint

I was actually more interested in the fact that they are updating Sense to run 2.1 which I figured. That should mean it being faster so rooting and/or flashing a new rom may not even be needed.

Nah - stock will always be slower due to bloatware.

A 2.1 stock ROM without bloatware may be quicker than a custom ROM, sure. But a stock ROM without bloatware is not really a stock ROM, now is it? ;)

I hoped I would see mention of a projected release date considering the title of this thread. Sorry, but this is nothing new.

I used to visit buzzaboutwireless all the time, but it turned into a daily vent of someone pissed about how vague the info Will and Sarah provide and then the forum homers jumping to the rescue to defend them for the wonderful job, they work so hard for us, blah, blah. They are Sprint employees paid to surf the forums and answer questions, so it's not like volunteering at the homeless shelter. They often just repeat the same old info over and over and cop attitudes when people get pissed about how poorly Sprint communicates with it's customers on updates.

Removal of bloatware isn't what speeds up the custom ROMs. What speeds them up is zipalign being run on things like Sense. Unless you hit the 70 app bug what is installed is unlikely to affect your performance.
