Came across this from another section of the site. There's a great new music player called RockOn3 (Search for RockOn in the Market and scroll down to 3). It's in beta, but has still become my default music player. I love the cube for browsing.

It's pretty good, I've been following its development for a while. One problem is that it takes a long time for it to switch between songs.

That's what puts me off using a different music app =/

Still, the cube is kinda cool.

Look for an app called "Open GL Demos", it has the cube from which the rockon cube is based.

Wow, its album cover searching algorithm seems to be really primitive, as I am getting lot of bogus images for less known artists. For example, I got an image of GM Volt Electric Car for album "VoLt - The Far Canal".

Few tests have confirmed that this app is looking for the album covers via Google's image search, as the bogus images were in top few results when searching for "artist name album name".

As for the app itself, I prefer simple, functional interface of MixZing Lite to artsy and "cool, modern" look of this "3" player. I'm sure this app will be exactly that - cool and modern music player - when it is finished. I'll check it out from time to time to see how it grows.

Rockbox is a firmware for iPods - do they do a stand alone player? If they do you would think it would turn up at some point, being open source. Would be cool.

RockOn 3 has done the neat trick of thinking about things differently. The cube is the point of it. Hopefully, they can iron out glitches for a release version, or a more mature app like MixZing could add the cube idea.

There was some talk of it on the rockbox forums a while ago, but havent visited for a while. Having just checked there doesnt seem to have been any work done since then. There isn't really a core dev team that do ports on rockbox, the idea is that if you want a port done then do it yourself.

If i had the time i'd seriously consider starting a port myself. Strip out all of the fluff (games etc) from it, just leave the core player functionality. Even though it's a replacement firmware, there's no inherent reason why it couldnt be turned into an android app - the software is pretty well layered, effectively there is an OS layer which could be stripped out and replaced by android. Shouldnt be too hard, 99% of the work involved in porting is in developing that OS layer (i.e. revere engineering drivers for the hardware) and apparently android supports native c execution now(?).

It'd be nice to see an android player that focuses on actually playing music really well instead of on downloading album art and other inane crap off the internet (no offense to the developers of rockon, but i'd rather have cuesheet processing and a wide variety of file formats before getting a flashy cube interface).

I've been getting quite a long gap between songs with it too.

Does anyone know of a player that doesn't have to connect online?

Mixzing always seems to be in the background even from a cold boot and all of the stuff set to go online is switched off.

I just want a player that works when I ask it too.

Yeah, that's what I'd prefer as well. I just found MixZing Lite to be the least intrusive player. Not counting the default music player, which is nice and simple, but can't preserve correct song order when adding an album into playlist.
