New phone for my daughter

We are an Android family (except for my iPhone wife). I am on Sprint through work and haven't really kept up with Verizon releases (my wife and kids are on Verizon). My oldest daughter got a Bionic just before heading off to college this summer, but she doesn't love it, it is merely adequate (weak signal pickup in her area). I bought a Droid 2 Global for my younger daughter last Christmas and it has been a huge disappointment. Locks up frequently, sometimes she can enter only a few letters of text before Go SMS shuts down....lots of little things. I don't think we have any upgrade offers currently (2 new phones in the past 4 months have used them up). I am not looking for cutting edge technology, just a reliable and reasonably fast Android phone for my daughter. I am not willing to shell out the bucks for a Nexus Prime, for example. What is a good choice for her? I am not even convinced it needs 4G, so that is not a major deciding factor for me.

Thanks. I haven't looked at Nokia. I did specifically ask her about the iPhone (ALL of her friends have them) and she was emphatic about not wanting that. She is pretty sold on Android (especially since she is used to it) but, like I said, hadn't even thought about Nokia.

Check out the HTC Rhyme. It is much better than the D2G (IMO I have a D2G and really don't like that phone). It also has what I think is the best looking version of sense to date. And it was not designed for men so I think your daughter may like it ;)

Hadn't looked at that one, either. I kinda like it - not too expensive, Gingerbread, pretty. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have an Incredible 2, and it is, if nothing else, reliable. It's got decent (but not HIGH end) specs, lasts 18 hours (for me) on a charge, and Sense has some pretty good social networking integration (I assume your daughter has FB and Twitter, and the like).

I highly recommend this phone to anyone who wants reliability and mid-range specs. Since it's 3G it's not uber expensive either. Let me know if you have any questions!

PS: While on the subject of upgrading, upgrade to an Android wife too! (JK, JK!!!)

I have been eyeing the DInc 2 also. Thanks for the feedback. If I have to pay full retail, the Rhyme and DInc 2 are both $440. The DInc has a larger screen but is running Android 2.2 (according to the Verizon website) while the Rhyme has 2.3 and some accessories of questionable usefulness. I'll probably just go to the store to look at them both and see if they will bargain on one of them.

As for the iOS wife - she was the last in the family to get a smartphone and went to the store by herself. I told her what to get (I don't even remember what it was) but the salesman convinced her to get the iPhone. She is happy with it (and that is what matters) but drives the rest of us crazy with her "how do I...... " questions which we can't answer since none of us have one. On the other hand, if she got what it told her to, you know whose fault it would be any time something went wrong, don't you? When her phone completely locked up last weekend she was in a panic and running out the door to get to Verizon before they closed. I found online how to reset the phone, so I am now a hero instead of a goat like I would have been if it happened with a phone I recommended.

The Inc 2 has been since upgraded to 2.3.4. It was an official VZW update way back in July I think, so I'm surprised they don't acknowledge it on the website.

Correction: In July it got upgraded to 2.3.3, then had a bug fixer and 2.3.4 a month-ish? ago

Even better! Thanks. I figured it might have been upgraded but hadn't looked into it yet.

Oh yeah, inc2 has had gb for a while now. I upgraded on it, no issues. Run very smooth, been very happy with the phone.

The rhyme is a nice little phone, no doubt. 2 big drawbacks...smaller screen..3.7" I think, and you cannot remove the battery.

Honestly, if the battery wasn't an issue, I know a ton of people who would buy that phone, cuz it runs so nice and smooth. New sense looks great. I know a lot of guys who would buy the phone and put a case over it (cuz its purple) and be totally happy. Its a nice phone, and I'd definitely have her look at that one. Anything HTC imo is an upgrade over moto...

To the OP, we're curious what you ended up getting for your daughter?

I read back through my posts. HA! Despite what she said, when we got to the store she glanced at the Android offerings and went straight to the iPhone. I think although she denied it, that is what she wanted all along. I had to pay through the nose for it (even the salesman tried to talk us out of it - "If you buy a cheap Android phone for now, come back in 6 months and you can use your discount on the iPhone"). However, although I am Android all the way, it has been an incredibly stable phone. She misses a couple features from the Android (customizing the wallpaper and the layout, etc.) but is overall satisfied. Besides - now she can Instagram and Pinterest with all of her friends! Peer pressure played a big role in it, I think.

On a side note, the Bionic has improved quite a bit with software updates and my older daughter is very happy with it right now.
