I'd say Motorola Droid X or HTC Evo 4G, but I don't know what you have available where you are (UK I'm guessing?) or what they run for pricing out there.

I have an Acer Liquid and I love it.

It has Android 2.1 (update through site) and will be getting 2.2 soon (scheduled for Mid-October-ish) while the Xperia has 1.6 and will be getting 2.1 soon (doubt it will ever see 2.2). Whether or not either phone gets 3.0 is unknown at the moment but I doubt it as the Liquid is already a year old and the Xperia is still far behind in firmware.

I honestly don't think you can get a better phone at the price of a Liquid. Hardware wise, it is pretty much like a 3.5" Desire with half the RAM (E has same amount) and slightly underclocked processor (still pretty fast overall).

It does have some cons (which doesn't really matter to me to be honest)
    1) Camera quality is not great.
    2) Body is plasticky (tho looks good imo)
    3) Build quality is suspect (I dropped mine from 4' onto tile and screen is messed, will be replacing that soon, but it still works great! It was clearly my fault tho. Had dropped it a couple of times before but never that bad and it was in great condition before that fall, still is overall in good condition, just the leaking screen)

If you want a phone which has 2.2 and is probably going to probably get 3.0 (probably will be the first to get it), you should look into a used Nexus One.
