I got the update now I have this annoying character counter in the window where I punch out my messages? How do I turn this off?

I would suggest you find another SMS program to use. I use Handcent, so I haven't even seen the counter you are talking about.

I noticed this issue when I updated the phone and it was annoying. I installed handcent and didnt like it at first but forgot to turn off the notification feature. So when I started getting txts pop up in it I gave it another shot and actually like it better now.

+1 for hancent to get rid of txt counter.

Its in the corner of the text box where you type the message. It looks fine to me but I can see how it may be annoying to some...

Am I the only one that doesn't care for Handcent? I think the built in SMS app looks a lot nicer. Granted, that new character counter gets in the way occasionally, but it still doesn't bother me enough to switch to Handcent. I tried Handcent out for a day and just didn't like it. I like the look of the built in one.

I agree that Handcent doesn't look all that great when you first get it, but the great thing about it is that it is very customizable. You can change the layout, bubbles, colors, fonts, etc. Play around with it... you just might like it. To each their own, though!

Today I apparently went over my 160 character limit and received a txt message from Verizon stating that non-Verizon recipients of the txt will only see the first 160 characters. My friend confirmed that he only received half my txt msg. So freaking annoying!

that is what the counter is for.

This is one reason why I came to like handcent. Under settings, there is an option to split 160. Auto splits sms when its length is longer than 160 and sends 2 msgs.

The counter was there before the update. But it only appeared when you were like 10 chars from the 160 char limit which was nice. I think they should make it go back to that, or make that an option.

I actually liked the character counter, although it was okay before the update when it just appeared when you started running out of space.

BUT, with all the raving about Handcent I downloaded it and wow it looks really nice! I might stick with it, I'll have to play with it a bit. Plus the splitting of SMS messages is a pretty good feature.

I'm not a big fan of Handcent at all. I found it to be far too laggy. I ended up going with Chomp.

In my Froyo 2.2, the counter appears only after the first 130 characters, alerting the remaining for one message...after the 160 chars, the counter keeps indicating the left chars and the message segments (quantity).

    At least for me, it
