Help new to Android help go Locker pattern security what's the point

if I push the home button it bypass the security is there something wrong I'm doing or is there a fix for it Thx.

Do u have it set to lock phone immediately? In other words, lock phone right after you push the power button or when the screen goes to sleep.

When I push power button phone sleeps immediately or If I leave the phone on home screen it goes to sleep after one minute.
