So I finally took the plunge and rooted this past weekend. I like the setup of my phone and haven't loaded any ROMs. I would just like my phone to run faster. Is there a way to overclock without loading a specific ROM? If not and I have to load one, will it change the layout of my phone? Thanks in advance for helping a new Rooter out.

The kernel is what is used to root your phone. You can use a kernel without using a different ROM, and no, kernels do not alter that layout of your phone.

However, there may be some kernels that will only work with specific ROMs.

I rooted the way it says to in the sticky thread.

So I do have to use a ROM to overclock?
