New to tablets

Hi Folks,
I'm an old guy that's trying to get into the tech age. Last week I bought a Nexus 7 (2013) w/32gb (Snapdragon) and it had Jellybean but within a couple days it upgraded to KitKat 4.4, now I can barely work my way around a laptop so I've got a boatload of questions. Oh yeah... I'm new to forums also.
Anyway my first problem is after downloading and installing a couple apps when I click on them it asks how I want to open them and gives a list of browsers I've installed. No matter which one I click on I get "no app installed to open this". Can someone tell me what app I'm missing?
Thank you for your time.....

You're trying to open data files. A data file is opened by an app. You need to have the app that opens that particular type of data file. Without knowing the type of data file we're talking about, we can't tell you which app to try to use to open it.

Normally if you install apps from the Google Play store, that won't happen.
