Looks like there is a newer version of Google Maps in the market than that which is on the Droid. On the Droid = 3.2.0 in market place is 3.2.1. I installed it and the navigation and all still seems to be there. Not sure what was in the updates but it did upgrade the version number.

If you download the newer version, will it overwrite the 3.2.0 version that is part of Android? Something tells me it won't, because all downloaded apps go into RAM/SD card. What's part of Andriod is part of the ROM, right?

I was wondering if I should download this. Didn't know if what came on the Droid was a better version or not.

Downloaded apps do *NOT* get installed to the SD card. Some of their data may be placed there but they are not installed there. Android does not support installing applications to the SD card out of the box.

It does replace the current version. You simply load it using the same icons and search functions that worked before however when it loads its the newer version.

Its not only the update for 1.6 as it updates things and all the navigation features still work just like one would expect on a Droid.

I didn't expect it to update and work like it did but I figured hell why not just give it a try. Like I said it updates and all seems to work.

Do you get notified of the update since it is pre-installed on the DROID?

nm, just checked, mine is still 3.2.0, and I have no notifications about an update....

Hmmm, so that begs the Question: If we find updates for apps pre-installed on the DROID, and install the updates, then can we uninstall the app completely? or will it revert to the originally installed version?

    Give it a try...

EDIT: Once installed if you go to that app in your downloads folder it says Uninstall updates rather than just Uninstall....

LMFAO - in the AM app, if I go to Google maps in Downloads, It has Uninstall updates instead of uninstall.

    So, obviously, no.

Yeah, saw that afterward. I didn't enable auto refresh on this page so I didn't see your edit until I added my last post.

Thanks for posting a link to the release notes.
I'm going to pass on installing this and wait until a notification. The reason is because the release notes only reference "Symbian Series 60 and Windows Mobile devices." Says nothing about Droid/Android 2.0. The version that's running on the Droid may have all these features in it already. This may just be a fix for those other OS's.

Unless someone can point to things this release fixes for Droid/Android 2.0?

The reason it only lists upgrades for those devices is because those release notes are for those devices. If there wasn't an updated version for the Android devices it wouldn't have shown up in the Android Marketplace.

Edit: Go read about it.... Looks like installing 3.2.1 actually adds navigation to Android 1.6 devices and higher and this actually is an update.

Curiously, right after I made my first post in this thread, I went looking to install the update - and AM notified me that there was an update through the normal means.

I have had no adverse affects from it, but YMMV. Since I can uninstall it I am keeping it until it shows some specific problem - then out the window it goes (the app, NOT the DROID :p).

I wonder if this will mess up the one version the phone comes with, which works great...

When an app is included in the phone, it will not affect the phone if you update a app. The only way the phone will be affected is if the app has some sort of bug. The only thing that will affect the phone is an update to the Operating System. Those are usually done on the computer. Those will update the core system OS and update the whole phone.

    Have a good one,
    Ben

Also: If you dont like the update, you should be able to restore to an older version. I will check up on this and let everyone know... :)
