Newb can't get K9 mail to run

Hi all.

First, this looks to be an awesome forum. Tons of info, but I haven't been able to find an answer to my problem.

I just got my Razr Maxx a week ago and wasn't happy with the Email client. I installed the latest version of K9 Mail (4.191) from the developer's page and like the way it works, but I can't get it to run. I can force fetch Email but it won't fetch unless I force it. If I go to Manage Apps, K9 Mail shows up in the list of installed apps, but if I go to Running Apps, it's not there. I'm thinking that if it's not running, it won't automatically check for mail. I can't find a way to get it to run. I've restarted the phone a few times and pushed a few buttons, uninstalled and reinstalled it too but I must be missing something.

OS is ICS.

K9 runs as a service so you won't always see it running.

Do you have it set to poll or are you using Push?

Different nomenclature. I'm a PC geek unfamiliar with the "Poll" term. Set that up and I think it's working right.

Polling can be hard on the battery if used too frequently but, depending on your email provider it may be the only way to fetch email. Push is more efficient but requires an email provider that supports IMAP idle (such as GMail)

True you can do a kinda faux push email by using the IMAP_IDLE command. It's not *true* push email, though, and actually is not more battery-efficient than polling. For more info lookup IMAP in Wikipedia or read this courtesy of the Enhanced Email FAQs:
