A ROM is a custom operating system.

Tons of extra options and performance enhancements. Not necessary but you get a much better experience.

similar to jailbreaking it allows the user to do much more, especially with a VM phone. For example VM has BlueTooth, but all you can use it for is handsfree calling, if you were to root your phone with one of the many ROMs you can do much more, like connect to a bluetooth keyboard.

The term for this is Rooting, which goes back to the base of the Android OS which is Unix. When you root your phone you are giving your self full admin privileges which in Unix speak you would be known as the Root User. You have the controls to do many things, change your status bar appearance, even over clock the processor of your phone but when you do process enhancements like that you are running into risks

It is only necessary if you want it. Right now the MT comes with Android 2.2 and VM is soon releasing 2.3. With ROMs that available you can already have a modded version of 2.3, and even 4.0 minus a few features since it is still in its alpha testing dev stage.

it took me 4 months until i finally decided to root my phone and I like the difference. I have noticed improved data speeds, extended battery life.. and there were a couple more things that I can't recall at the moment.

    Hope that helps

There is a handful of ROMS to use and each has a benefit and also lack some features. The most solid ROMS which has everything working like HDMI, Camera, and such are your Froyo ROMS. If you move into CM7 you get tons of features even more than what the Froyo offers, however you will lack HDMI.

There is then the CM9/AOKP ROMS which run a flavor of Ice Cream Sandwich with tons of great features. The down side is you loose Camera, and HDMI as they are still in Alpha.

Check out the list and click the links. All the Dev's are very good at listing what works and doesn't work for each ROM.

The ROM I am on is TGReloaded (CM7) .. which has since been taken over and renamed by a new dev its a Gingerbread build. I only update the ROM if there is something drastic that calls for a change and the fix is pointed out in the new build

I am waiting for an ICS rom to develop the camera then will be migrating to which ever version and see if I like it. I also plan to start helping the efforts in making and further developing current roms since I have programming in my background

as stated its best if the person that installing the rom decides which one suits him/her. And if there are any questions the community is more that happy to assist in any way we can
