Running 2.3.340 Z4 rooted...nothing else. Tried the OTA update and it failed with a simple message "Software Update Failed".

How do I know what is causing this failure in order to know how to proceed?

It's been a year and I likely got rid of some bloatware...Amazon MP3, Car Dock, and who knows what else. I assume there's no way to know for sure.

If you got rid of anything you're gonna have to SBF back to stock Froyo. Then you should be able to get the ota. One thing to always remember is if you remove anything an ota will fail.

VZW checks your phone to see if everything is intact. If it's not then you must be rooted and modded your phone and we don't deserve to get the ota. We rooters are SCUM!......lol

if your rooted now, download titanium backup and backup all your apps/data, and text messages, and anything you want backed up, sbf back
but the easiest thing for you if your on STOCK .340 rooted just download droid x or droid 2 bootstrapper and upgrade to the 2 part file of .596 its already rooted and deodexed. then once titanium backup is reinstalled, restore all apps/data
if you accept the OTA, you will lose root, and not be able to root until they develop a way to do it. easiest way for you is to stay stock .340 and use droid x(2) bootstrap recovery to install rooted gb

in the future...DO NOT remove bloatware...freeze it with titanium, or rename it...if you REALLY want to remove it make sure you back it up with titanium first...

It completed and rebooted. All my apps appear to be as they were except I am no longer rooted...of course. When I go into System Updates it's greyed out. I'm afraid to ask what that means.

Sorry for the quick responses. I'm trying to get this thing working faster than you can reply. Sorry.

I activated and phone is working.,

Yes, Gmail is force closing every time I reboot and if I try to start the app. Everything else seems to be working.

At this point should I root before updating to 596?

It's now there but I haven't grabbed it as I understand it can't be rooted. I think I understand that I should grab the 2-part pre-rooted 596 files listed in this forum.?. Correct?

Very good! Thanks! Does it matter where on the SD card I place the files? Does Bootstrap allow me to choose where to load the files from?

It doesn't matter where you put the files. They say to put them on the root of your sd card but I have flashed files going into my downloads folder just fine. It's more of an easy access thing to put them on the root of the card.

Just navigate to the GB file and click it. it will ask you if you want to flash the file, say yes. It will give you a warning telling this operation cannot be undone. Just click yes and it will flash the file for you.

You can scroll your menus if you have a lot of stuff on your card So if you don't see the file, don't panic. Just scroll using the up and down volume keys. And remembering exactly where on the card you put them helps.....lol

Hey guys, sorry but another noob here...
I read all of the above and I read the instructions here: Official DX Gingerbread 2.3.3 (4.5.596) Release Thread - Something for everyone

But I'm still confused. Which "two files" is everyone referring to? Is it the "deodexed version" and the "odexed version," or is it "update.zip" part 1 and part 2?
Or am I supposed to install "update.zip" part 1 and part 2 first (to get my radio to be .12P) and then install the "odexed version" and the "deodexed version?"

the 2 files are only for if your coming from .340

the 2 files are what brings you to the correct kernel version. the 2 part files should be deodexed

That's a good question camphill. I see no way to tell the phone to only manually update. You guys got any ideas? Freeze the vzw updater maybe?

Still happening. Every once in awhile an error pops up saying download failed. So apparently the phone doesn't see that 596 is already installed and is trying to grab OTA. Don't want to freeze the updater in case I need it, but I guess I could since nothing else shoudl be coming down the pipe anyways. Rather figure out why this is happening. Thanks all.
