I've had the Samsung Captivate for approximately three weeks and just purchased a 16gb micro sd card. I noticed the following while checking the SD card and phone storage:
External SD card - total space is 14.89gb with the same amount of available space
Internal SD card - 13.03gb with 10.68gb of available space
Internal phone storage - 1.53gb available space

I've noticed when you install new apps, I guess their installed in the Internal phone storage? How would I get more use out of the memory card?

There's info on the Captivate FAQ (always a good place to check first):

Yes, apps install onto the internal 2GB by default. Moving apps to SD is a feature of Android 2.2 "Froyo". You use the memory card to store large data items: movies, music, other files, etc. Apps also store their data there, and those that let you select the path you can configure to save to the external SD.
