Being totally clueless I plan to search all these things you're talking about, but am I right in thinking it's similar to "jailbreaking" an iphone, in concept?

(Who am I not minding, btw?)

Conceptually ....yes... but at the same time no... you actually have alot more flexability than on an iPhone. If your familier with linux or unix based systems. Then having su (super user) access to a system gives you "god" access.... or full control. Lets you do things like overclock the cpu to make it much faster, remove apps preinstalled by the carrier.... flash ROMs developed by very smart guys: CyanogenMod | Android Community Rom based on Donut tree.

I feel like im corrupting a child.... stealing your inocence. I should quit before I get arrested.

Conceptually.. I understand linux. :p I've played with ubuntu before, but never.. done the switch. :p

So this... voids a warranty, maaaybe?

If you flash your ROM and take it back to the store because the flash stopped working and the VZW kid is bright enough to look at the rom biuld number.... then yeah.... you could be outta luck.

It's easy enough to get it back to the default outta the box base rom though.... so unless the screen dies or some other hardware failure occures then your always a few button presses away the baseline rom flash. I wouldnt worry about that yet though.... as of right now there isnt any custom roms for the droid. Only su access... which is usually the precursor.
