Does anyone else's 3G service not connect when they're in a phone call?

Cant talk and use the net at the same time. That is not limited to droid phones. Thats just part of cdma, the type of signal that verizon uses. (unless your on wifi at the time, then I think you can do both).

Yup - wifi allows both at the same time, only way on CDMA phones.

When vzw rolls out LTE (next year?) you'll be able to call/surf at the same time.

Wow, Im surprised competing phone companies haven't pointed out this issue a little more. I had no idea about it.

They have pointed it out. The only reason that you can do it on the other networks is because there voice and 3G Data networks are totally separate. If you want to read the full explanation you can read it here: http://androidforums.com/lounge/82363-why-cdma-better-than-gsm.html
It's kind of a really long post but is worth reading if you have any real interest in cell technology.
