Root NOOB needs help with ROM!

May carrier is U.S. Cellular. It has the original card that came with the phone. It's a Samsung MicroSDHC card. 8 gig. Need more details than that?

So all of the roms in teh second post would work for me? Is there one on there that would be the equivalent to the

Not all. In post 2 is a cdma section. Theres only a handful of cdma Roms available

A2sd is an add on for cm7 so not for that.

I don't really know about cdma Roms. You'll have to read each thread carefully but I assume most will need it

One more silly question... how do I segment my card? Does that mean I'll loose all my information and files that are stored on it? Thy say to segment but none seem to say how you do that.

Download Gparted (google it) Burn the ISO to a CD and reboot the PC to boot from the CD. This should run Gparted (think you need a PS2 keyboard not USB, but can't remember TBH) Then partition the card to how the rom you've chosen recommends. Some need EXT3 partition before FAT32, some after. There is a graphical bar representing your SD card so you can see what's happening.

I can honestly say take the time to read the info in SUroots signature. He helped me with my first root and rom, and so many others on here. The information you need is all on there. If you hit terminology etc you don't understand come back and ask.

So it's something I have to do from my PC, not my phone? I read over the how-to, but I'm not sure how you reboot your PC from a CD?

Yes you run it from the PC. PC's have an option as to which device gets booted first, usually the hard disk. Change it to CD. How you do it depends on PC. Either go into the BIOS and change the boot order to put CD first or look for a message as the machine loads (before it gets to windows loading) It should say something like F8 boot menu - you can then select the CD drive from there. The GParted ISO you download and burn creates a bootable CD.

Another question I didn't see addressed in any guides is you said I couldn't run the recommended ROMS because I have a CDMA card and flashing GSM roms. What type of SD card do I need to run the ROMS everyone's been suggesting? Can I just run out and buy the appropriate card for those roms? Are they readily available? Would the right card say GSM somewhere on it, or what am I looking for in a new card?

Nothing to do with the SD card, it's the type of phone. GSM and CDMA phones are different. It appears from reading the thread you have a CDMA one so need a ROM written for a CDMA phone and not a GSM one.

Probably because I don't really know what a SIM card is, lol. Thanks guys for bearing with me through this. I just want to be able to use my phone; I'm a little lost without it. After owrk I'll be putting some of these suggestions into practice.

GParted links.
Decide on a ROM you like the look of first and read what the SD card requirements are. Then run GParted and set the card up as required.
Once it is set up, copy the ROM zip file onto the SD card and flash it.

Alright, think I'm getting there.
I'm trying to get this rom:

I downloaded the one with radio, is that correct?
and it doesn't seem to say anythinga bout what order to segment the card in,does that mean it doesn't matter? thanks.

Bad news guys, this might be my last question
I downloaded the ROM in the link above, but before the GParted downloaded I figured I'd try it without the card semgemted... and it finally worked!
Just wonering if by not segmenting I'm missing out on anything, or is it good to go/
Frankly I'm jsut happy to have it booting up again.

You're just missing out on more space for apps

now youve got it booted take a backup so fi anything goes wrong you can just restore back.

Almost there. Note this Rom supports "A2SD (512MB minimum EXT3 partition needed to work)"
Basically you create an ext3 partition on your sd card (using gparted) This rom will then see this extended partition as an extension to your phones internal memory alleviating the low memory problems common with desires.

Thats nothing to do with the partition. Please, please Please read the a2sd FAQ I pointed you to earlier. It is ALL explained.
