I'm completely new with the HTC Evo and all Android phones, and I had a few questions about the hacking this phone. I've had a iPhone 3g for years now, and I understand everything about the jailbreaking and unlocking process for iPhone.

So basically I was wondering if someone can explain what exactly "rooting" the phone does. I have read that it can tether the phone, but I really don't understand what that does. Also, if that in any way can lead to getting free apps on the phone like the jailbreak does with the iPhone. Finally, if there is any way to unlock the phone for other providers like T-Mobile (I'm guessing there isn't, but I just need some clarification).

Any information would help. Thanks a lot.

That's a good guide but if you're still wondering what tethering your phone does then here it is. Sprint charges $30 to use the mobile hotspot on your phone(aka tethering) so you can get internet on your computers. With root you can use it for free
