It's quite easy to make them tbh. Could release one within an hour of the link being available

This is probably a stupid question, but I have read quite a lot on the forum without finding an answer I understand (not suprised, I might not even know the question):

I downloaded the developers GB RUU and installed it. It was quite easy. (In my opinion not much changed. Slightly more space maybe, but the screen seems to drain the battery faster, shouldn't that be the other way around?)

Anyway, I read that this was a "one way route" to a worse ROM somewhere, meaning I now will be unable to root my phone? Can someone explain to me if this is true?

You cant root the phone or return it to 2.2 currently.

Does the screen drain the battery faster, or does the screen usage go up (higher %)?

Shame but understandable, wanted an ota so I wouldn't have a wipe of stuff on there. Oh well...

Not sure, the info in the "Mini info" app says 42 % of the battery during 24 hrs went to the screen. I believe this is more than I used to have. I will try turning off the automatic brightness, to see if that has an effect.

Also, the phone went from 70 % battery to 55 % during night time (six hours). Wi-fi was on. I later in the day turned off wi-fi and left the phone (with the screen off) on my desk for a few hours, and only lost one or two per cent then. Got the feeling the screen or wi-fi was less "clever" in GB than Froyo, even though it was supposed to be the other way around. But again, there doesn't seem to be many experiencing this, so it could just as well perhaps be a random app acting up.

Screen remains a constant draw of power. You can change the brightness but 50% birghtness will use the same amount of power on any 2 different roms. Things that use battery by using memory and CPU (especially CPU) as the kernels and CPU usage becomes more efficient, start to use less power, meaning things that remain the same (as it has to total 100%) take a bigger percentage appearing that they use more power when infact everrything else uses less power. Its relative.

In regards to the 70-55% that IS a lot compared to what I am used to.

Its all irrelevant. The manufacturing warranty would still stand directly with HTC so gives a monkies about the carriers

Oh crap, I guess I was too eager to try GB :(

Can anyone tell me if/when it will be possible again to root a Desire with 2.3 on it?

We don't know. Best guess is to watch progress on a tool called Revolutionary, being put together by the alpharev and unrevoked teams (there's enough info there that a web search will find it). When they add Desire hboot 1.02 to the supported devices then we are in business (though the tool is a beta right now).

I've held off S-Offing for the mo. Not sure why, but probably just because I don't fully understand it, and there seems more likelihood of bricking messing around with Hboot versions etc. I just don't have the time to mess about if I do brick it.
Might have a look when I get back from my camping holiday next week!
