So when I bought my Desire one of my goals was to tether it, as I don't have internet at home. The research I did said this was possible. My sales associate said this was possible. I was happy.

Now, as I try to actually do it, I'm being told (by a different USCC sales associate), this is actually an additional fee to the data plan. This was never mentioned. I am not happy.

Any way around this?

You can root it and tether it with a custom Rom but that would be against USCC policy. To be legal - you would need to pay that $25 a month.

I was hoping 2.2 would take care of this, but I obviously don't know much about it. I'm not in any real hurry- will 2.2 make tethering simple for a luddite (and without added fees)?

2.2 will allow the phone to become a mobile hot-spot. As far as I was told, they cannot charge more for what a phone can do "stock" out of the box. So wait a few weeks, and you will be all good!
