Help Not seeing emoji's?

Hi, I just received my Evo V 4g yesterday, and right away I installed Handcent Sms and the Emoji plugin. I am able to send emoji's to a friend with another android phone with handcent, etc. with Mms. But, when she tries to send me an emoji, my phone cannot detect and instead replaces it with "?", "?=?", "?(letter)".

I know many people have been complaining about this, but I haven't actually seen a solution that works. Any suggestions?
